Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi is a really beautiful 240 km long canal which connects the Garonne River to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean and along with the Canal de Garonne forms the Canal des Deux Mers joining the Atlantic to the Mediterranean near Narbonne.

The canal runs from the pretty city of Toulouse to the Mediterranean port of Sete a couple of hours drive north of Villa La Cascade. It’s a beautiful place to visit and easily reached from our Languedoc holiday villa.

This beautiful part of Languedoc and the canal gained significant coverage as a result of the hugely popular TV cookery programme Rick Stein's French Odyssey. The canal runs across the plain north of the Corbieres - just 30 minutes from Villa La Cascade and canal villages such as Roubia, Le Somail and Paraza are well worth a visit to wnder about or perhaps enjoy a glass of Languedoc wine . These are sleepy, charming little oases of calm with little happening other than the regular appearance of a tourist barge or hire cruiser to disturb the ducks!
