If you are considering a holiday villa near Perpignan, the city of Perpignan is just under an hour from our Languedoc villa in Durban Corbières. With a population of just over 100,000 it’s the largest city in the area and Perpignan airport is very often the arrival point for our Perpignan villa guests coming to Villa La Cascade. Given its size there are always a wide range of things to see and do every year in the last weekend of August in the Palace of the Kings of Majorca the free 3 day Guitares au Palais takes place. With a lively Catalan influence, the history of Perpignan is very much based on the history of the often stormy relationship between France and Spain – indeed Perpignan became part of France as part of the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659.
Famous for its rugby club – USA Perpignan and dominated by the peak of Canigou, Perpignan is an easy day trip from our Languedoc holiday villa and sites include The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist of Perpignan. Catalan artist Salvador Dali is closely associated with the city – declaring that the Iberian Peninsula rotated precisely at Perpignan station 132 million years ago! The weather is also an important consideration for a Languedoc holiday and the Languedoc weather in the Perpignan region rarely disappoints – long summers, short winters and a very strong chance of a blue Mediterranean sky.
