If you want to rent a villa near Beziers, the town is about an hour north of Villa La Cascade and the next town north of Narbonne. It’s a town steeped in the history of the Cathars and overlooks the River Orb. The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passes through Beziers. The old town is a pretty and worthwhile destination dominated by the Romanesque Cathédrale St-Nazaire. Beziers is famous for its Feria or bullfighting. The festival takes place in mid August and last for 4 days and brings a little bit of Spain to the Languedoc.
For lovers of Languedoc food and wine Les Halles covered market at the end of the Rue Republique (closed Mondays) offers a wide variety of fresh local foods. For those staying in our Languedoc villa, Beziers makes an interesting day trip.
Attractions include the Musée des Beaux Arts - definitely the best of the town’s museums with paintings by Rubens and Delacroix. If lazing in the shade of the tree lined Place Jean Jaures is more you kind of thing, then a range of cafes and bars provide welcome respite from the Mediterranean sunshine and in July, the Bastille Day celebrations are worth seeing!
